The reconstruction covers 226 – 1965 CE and is associated with the California Current strength based on the similarities between carbon export, Globigerinoides ruber Mg/Ca SST reconstruction, and modern zooplankton biovolume records. The paleoproductivity record shows large coherence with Pacific Decadal Oscillation (PDO) reconstructions, and is clearly linked with medieval Western North American droughts. The results show that the observed reduced decadal to multidecadal variability of the PDO reconstructions during the Little Ice Age is not unique and there is an alternation between increased and reduced multidecadal variability during the last two millennia. Most of the intervals with reduced variability seem to be associated with cold periods and glacial advance in the Northern Hemisphere. The mechanism is probably related with the southward migration of the westerlies during relatively cool periods in the NH and a southward shift of the North Pacific Current which could have reduced the advection of subarctic waters to the subtropical region. # #ADDITIONAL REFERENCES: #Dekens, P.S., D.W.
