Stable isotope analyses were carried out at 1 cm sample spacing using a VG Optima isotope ratio mass spectrometer equipped with an automated carbonate carousel. Values are reported in per mil relative to Vienna Pee Dee Belemnite. Duplicate or triplicate analyses, for which results have been averaged, comprise 10% of the 2248 foraminiferal samples. Twenty-eight AMS radiocarbon dates provide age control for JPC-76. Radiocarbon analyses were performed at the Lawrence Livermore National Laboratory's Center for Accelerator Mass Spectrometry (CAMS). PRECISION: Oxygen isotopes (d18O): 0.08 permil (375 standards) Radiocarbon (14C) ages: 40-80 years DATES OF DATA GENERATION: Oxygen isotopes: July 1998-December 2000 Radiocarbon ages: March 1997-April 1999 NOTES: 1) For 14C and calendar ages: mbsf = meters below sea floor d13C = per mil relative to Vienna-Pee Dee Belemnite d14C = per mil relative to modern concentrations (where 0 per mil = modern and -500 per mil = 5568 years old) Depths below 486 cm have been corrected due to the presence of a foraminifera- poor sandy layer, interpreted as a turbidite, between 486 and 521 cm. Radiocarbon concentration is given as fraction modern, D14C, and conventional radiocarbon age. Radiocarbon ages are corrected for foraminiferal 13C according to Stuiver and Polach [Radiocarbon 19, 355-363, 1977]. 14C age is in radiocarbon years using the Libby half-life of 5568 years and following the conventions of Stuiver and Polach [Radiocarbon 19, 355-363, 1977]. Radiocarbon ages are converted to calendar age using CALIB 4.3 [Stuiver and Reimer, Radiocarbon 35, 215-230, 1993; updated internet reference http://depts.washington.edu/qil/calib/calib.html]. Following Ingram and Southon [Radiocarbon 38, 573-582, 1996], we have used a surface water reservoir age of 710 years for the Santa Barbara Basin. Due to the presence of a large radiocarbon plateau near 8.9 14C ka [Hughen et al., Nature 391, 65-68, 1998], linear interpolation of calibrated calendar ages between 615 and 1065 cm has been performed to avoid unrealistic sedimentation rates and age inversions in the sediment column. The line of interpolation ("Plateau Correction") does not exceed the 2sigma uncertainty on the calibrated calendar ages ("Cal +2sigma" and "Cal -2sigma"). Small sample sizes for four of the analyses, as indicated in the last column, do not seem to have substantially increased the uncertainty in 14C age of these samples. 1) For oxygen isotopes: Starred (*) data at 486 cm corrected depth are in the section of the core assumed to be a turbidite layer (486-521 cm uncorrected depths). These ten samples are considered to have been deposited simultaneously and their values were averaged for time series analyses. ABSTRACT: We use a pair of decadally resolved planktonic foraminiferal d18O records from Santa Barbara Basin (SBB) to show that the warmest interval of the current interglacial, the middle Holocene, was characterized by increased decadal- to centennial-scale climatic variability. Modern relationships between the Pacific Decadal Oscillation (PDO), the El Niño-Southern Oscillation (ENSO), and upper water conditions in SBB also suggest a preference of the northeast (NE) Pacific climate during the warm mid-Holocene toward the warm phase of the PDO and more intense ENSO warm events (“El Niños”). In the context of future climate, this study suggests increasing decadal- to centennial-scale climatic variability in a globally warmed world. DATA: 1.
