Santa Barbara Basin Alkenones ----------------------------------------------------------------------- NOAA Paleoclimatology Program and World Data Center for Paleoclimatology ----------------------------------------------------------------------- NOTE: PLEASE CITE ORIGINAL REFERENCE WHEN USING THIS DATA!!!!! CONTRIBUTOR: Julie A. Kennedy, Stanford University IGBP PAGES/WDCA CONTRIBUTION SERIES NUMBER: 96-015 NAME OF DATA SET: Santa Barbara basin alkenones LAST UPDATE: 7/96 (Original receipt date by NOAA/ WDC-A Paleo) GEOGRAPHIC REGION: Santa Barbara basin, coastal California, 34 14'N, 120 01'W PERIOD OF RECORD: 1915-1988 A.D. DESCRIPTION: Annual variations in alkenone unsaturation in laminated sediments in the Santa Barbara basin reveal increases in water temperature which can be linked directly to the observed sequence of El Nino events in the twentieth century. Water temperatures calculated from Uk37 values correspond broadly to 20m water temperature data of the calCOFI program for 1953-1984. Full details of sampling and methodology are in the file methods.txt. ORIGINAL REFERENCE: Kennedy, J.A. and S.C. Brassell, 1992. A Munsell soil color chart (5Y) was used for color descriptions, which ranged from shades of sandy yellow (6/3, 5/3, 5/4) to olive and gray-green (4/1, 4/2), gray (3/1, 3/2), and charcoal to black (2.5/1). The number of rotations of the worm gear required to bring the surface back to the zero position (i.e. even with the lip of the core liner) after removal of a layer is given by the # Turns category. One rotation extrudes the core 3.19mm. 10B Sample # Munsell Chart Color Other Description # Turns 1 2.5/1 with 5/3 2 "5/3 6/3 2.5/1" 1 3 5/3 & 6/3 1 4 "5/3 small 2.5/1 & 4/1" small white dots & 1 shell ~1mm 1 5 2.5/1 1 6 5/3 small 3/1 1 7 5/3 surface uneven 1.5 8 2.5/1 1.5 9 5/3 white dots 1 bl/gray shell 0.5 10 3/1 1 11 2.5/1 charcoal gray not black 1 12 2.5/1 1.5 13 3/1 1 14 5/3 with 3/1 1 15 2.5/1 1 16 5/3 with 3/1 1 17 4/1 mottled 1.5 18 5/3 with 4/1 1 19 3/1 with 4/1 & small 5/3 0.5 20 4/1 with 5/3 0.5 21 3/1 with 4/1 & small 5/3 1.5 22 4/1 with 5/3 0.5 23 3/1 to 2.5/1 dark gray not black 1 24 5/3 1 25 3/1 1 26 5/3 with 4/1 1 27 5/3 with 3/1 1 28 3/1 1 29 5/3 1.5 30 2.5/1 small 5/3 1 31 5/3 0.5 32 3/1 to 2.5/1 0.5 33 2.5/1 small 4/1 1.5 34 2.5/1 0.5 35 5/3 with 4/1 less watery 2 36 2.5/1 with thin 5.3 1 37 5/3 small bits of shell 0.5 38 2.5/1 0.5 39 5/3 with 2.5/1 thin stick ~6mm 1 40 2.5/1 with 5/3 2 41 4/1 0.5 42 2.5/1 0.5 43 3/1 some 4/2 0.5 44 2.5/1 1 45 4/1 with 3/1 1.5 46 3/1 0.5 47 5/3 with 3/1 1 48 2.5/1 with 5/3 forams 2 49 4/1 0.5 50 4/1 or 4/2 with 3/1 1 51 4/2 with 2.5/1 "white dots broken shell ?" 0.5 52 4/1 with 5/3 mottled 1.5 53 3/1 with 5/3 1.5 54 5/3 0.5 55 3/1 with 5/3 1 56 2.5/1 very black 1 57 4/1 with 5/3 mottled 0.5 58 4/1 with 5/3 mottled 0.5 59 2.5/1 with mottled other 1 60 5/3 small 4/1 1.5 61 3/1 with 4/1 & 2.5/1 1 62 5/3 0.5 63 3/1 with 4/1 0.5 64 2.5/1 dark gray not black 1 65 3/1 1 66 2.5/1 1 67 3/1 0.5 68 5/3 with thin 3/1 2 69 2.5/1 2 70 2.5/1 small shells 1 71 5/3 with 3/1 small shells 1 72 2.5/1 2 73 4/2 0.5 74 4/2 with 2.5/1 "shell ~ 1mm shell fragments" 1 75 4/2 with 2.5/1 1 76 "4/1 4/2 5/3" 1 77 5/3 with some 4/1 1 78 2.5/1 1 79 5/3 to 4/3 not quite as sandy colored as 5/3 0.5 80 2.5/1 small 5/3 2 81 4/2 0.5 82 3/1 to 2.5/1 0.5 83 2.5/1 1 84 3/1 1 85 4/1 & mixed others 1 86 4/1 & mixed others 1 87 4/1 to 4/2 1 88 4/1 to 4/2 1 89 5/3 0.5 90 3/1 to 4/2 mottled 0.5 91 5/3 1 92 3/1 with small 2.5/1 1 93 4/1 1 94 2.5/1 black 1 95 4/2 with 3/1 mottled 1 96 4/1 and 4/2 1 97 5/3 with some 4/1 1 98 2.5/1 dark gray not black 1 99 5/3 with small 2.5/1 0.5 100 4/2 with 3/1 & 5/3 mixed 1 2
