However, some taxa have been reported to reflect past depositional conditions suggesting they have experienced weak selection after burial. In sediments underlying the Arabian Sea oxygen minimum zone (OMZ), we performed the first metagenomic profiling of sedimentary DNA at centennial-scale resolution in the context of a multi-proxy paleoclimate reconstruction. While vertical distributions of sulfate reducing bacteria and methanogens indicate energy-based selection typical of anoxic marine sediments, 5-15% of taxa per sample exhibit depthindependent stratigraphies indicative of paleoenvironmental selection over relatively short geological timescales. Despite being vertically separated, indicator taxa deposited under OMZ conditions were more similar to one another than those deposited in bioturbated intervals under intervening higher oxygen. The genomic potential for denitrification also correlated with palaeo-OMZ proxies, independent of sediment depth and available nitrate and nitrite. However, metagenomes revealed mixed acid and Entner-Dourdoroff fermentation pathways encoded by many of the same denitrifier groups. Fermentation thus may explain the subsistence of these facultatively anaerobic microbes whose stratigraphy follows changing paleoceanographic conditions. At least for certain taxa, our analysis provides evidence of their paleoenvironmental selection over the last glacial-interglacial cycle. #--------------------------------------- # Funding_Agency # Funding_Agency_Name: National Science Foundation # Grant: MGG-1357017, OCE-0939564, OCE-0634731 #--------------------------------------- # Funding_Agency # Funding_Agency_Name: KAUST-WHOI # Grant: 7000000463, 7000000464 #--------------------------------------- # Site Information # Site_Name: 64PE300–11 # Location: Arabian Sea # Country: Pakistan # Northernmost_Latitude: 23.121667 # Southernmost_Latitude: 23.121667 # Easternmost_Longitude: 66.496667 # Westernmost_Longitude: 66.496667 # Elevation: -566 #--------------------------------------- # Data_Collection # Collection_Name: 64PE300–11C Uk37 Orsi2017 # First_Year: 52900 # Last_Year: 330 # Time_Unit: cal yr BP # Core_Length: 13.4 m # Notes: #--------------------------------------- # Chronology_Information # Chronology: # AMS radiocarbon ages for core 64PE300–11C and tie points to core SO90-136KL # labcode sample identification used by 14C laboratory # depth Depth top of sample interval (cm) # mat.dated Material Dated # 14C.age conventional radiocarbon age, years before 1950AD # 14C.err radiocarbon age, standard error # datemeth Dating method # reservoir Reservoir correction # delta-R Deviation from global mean reservoir correction # calib.14C.range Calibrated age range # calib.age.tie.point Median calibrated age or tie point # calib_method Calibration method # # labcode depth mat.dated 14C.age 14C.err datemeth reservoir delta-R calib.14C.range calib.age.tie.point calib_method # OS-112414 13 mixed planktonics 1470 20 14C AMS 565 35 745-930 848 Calib 7.1 # OS-111794 73 Orbulina universa 3270 20 14C AMS 565 35 2762-2992 2877 Calib 7.1 # OS-111793 87 Orbulina universa 3530 20 14C AMS 565 35 3106 -
