Here we use bulk sediment redox-sensitive metal enrichment factors (MoEF, ReEF, and UEF) and scanning X-ray fluorescence records to examine annual-scale sedimentary oxygen concentrations in the Santa Barbara Basin from the Industrial Revolution (Common Era ~1850) to present. Enrichments are linked to measured bottom water oxygen concentrations after 1986. We reveal gradual intensification of the coastal oxygen minimum zone (OMZ) on the southern California margin coinciding with the twentieth century anthropogenic warming trend that leads to reduced oxygen solubility and greater stratification. High-frequency interannual oscillations become more prominent over the last three decades. These are attributed to local “flushing events” triggered by the transition from El Niño to La Niña conditions, which further amplify changes in the extratropical southern Californian OMZ. #--------------------------------------- # Funding_Agency # Funding_Agency_Name: NSF # Grant: OCE-1304327 #--------------------------------------- # Site_Information # Site_Name: SPR0901-04BC Santa Barbara Basin # Location: California # Country: United States # Northernmost_Latitude: 34.281583 # Southernmost_Latitude: 34.281583 # Easternmost_Longitude: -120.0414833 # Westernmost_Longitude: -120.0414833 # Elevation: -588 #--------------------------------------- # Data_Collection # Collection_Name: SPR0901-04BC trace Wang2017 # First_Year: 1759 # Last_Year: 2007.5 # Time_Unit: AD # Core_Length: 0.61 # Notes: #--------------------------------------- # Chronology_Information # Chronology: #--------------------------------------- # Variables # Data variables follow that are preceded by "##" in columns one and two. # Variables list, one per line, shortname-tab-longname components (9 components: what, material, error, units, seasonality, archive, detail, method, C or N for Character or Numeric data) ## depth_cm depth,,,centimeter,,Paleoceanography,,,N, ## age_AD age,,,calendar year,,Paleoceanography,,,N, ## aluminum aluminum, sediment,,weight percent,,Paleoceanography,raw,inductively-coupled plasma atomic emission spectroscopy,N, ## manganese manganese, sediment,,microgram per gram,,Paleoceanography,raw,inductively-coupled plasma atomic emission spectroscopy,N, ## molybdenum molybdenum, sediment,,microgram per gram,,Paleoceanography,raw,inductively-coupled plasma mass spectrometry,N, ## rhenium rhenium, sediment,,microgram per gram,,Paleoceanography,raw,inductively-coupled plasma mass spectrometry,N, ## sulfur sulfur, sediment,,weight percent,,Paleoceanography,raw,inductively-coupled plasma mass spectrometry,N, ## titanium titanium, sediment,,weight percent,,Paleoceanography,raw,inductively-coupled plasma mass spectrometry,N, ## uranium uranium, sediment,,microgram per gram,,Paleoceanography,raw,inductively-coupled plasma mass spectrometry,N, ## toc organic carbon, sediment,,weight percent,,Paleoceanography, raw,,N, #------------------------ # Data: # Data lines follow (have no #) # Data line format -
