Swart. 2006. Stable isotope and growth records in corals from the island of Tobago: Not simply a record of the Orinoco. Proceedings of the 10th International Coral Reef Symposium (Okinawa):580-587 # Abstract: The geochemical composition of skeletons from corals growing around the island of Tobago is impacted by several environmental forcing factors. This project studied the stable oxygen and carbon isotopic composition, extension, skeletal luminescence, and the carbon and nitrogen isotopic composition of organic material contained in skeletons of the scleractinian corals Montastraea faveolata and Siderastrea siderea living at a relatively shallow depth (2-14 m) at Tobago. On an annual basis, the Orinoco River delivers organics-laden, lower salinity waters into the tropical North Atlantic where currents carry it north and west to Tobago and the eastern Caribbean. In addition, the Intertropical Convergence Zone (ITCZ) interacts with sea surface temperature (SST) and Venezuelan precipitation affecting the annual Orinoco floods. The wide-ranging effects of El Niño-Southern Oscillation (ENSO) also extend over South America and into the tropical North Atlantic. All these factors are suggested to influence the d18O of the coral skeletons, which is not simplistically related to either SST or the discharge of Orinoco. These forcing factors, each with independent oscillations in strength and phase, interact to produce a complex geochemical signal in Tobago coral skeletons. #------------------ # Funding_Agency # Funding_Agency_Name: # Grant: #------------------ # Site_Information # Site_Name: Buccoo Reef, Tobago # Location: Ocean>Atlantic Ocean>North Atlantic Ocean>Caribbean Sea>Trinidad And Tobago # Country: Trinidad And Tobago # Northernmost_Latitude: 11.17 # Southernmost_Latitude: 11.17 # Easternmost_Longitude: -60.85 # Westernmost_Longitude: -60.85 # Elevation: -4 m #------------------ # Data_Collection # Collection_Name: 06trin04a # Earliest_Year: 1979 # Most_Recent_Year: 1987 # Time_Unit: AD # Core_Length: # Notes: #------------------ # Species # Species_Name: Sidereastrea siderea # Common_Name: #------------------ # Chronology_Information # Chronology: # #---------------- # Variables # # Data variables follow that are preceded by "##" in columns one and two. # Data line variables format: Variables list, one per line, shortname-tab-longname-tab-longname components (9 components: what, material, error, units, seasonality, archive, detail, method, C or N for Character or Numeric data) # ##age age, , ,years AD, , , , ,N ##lumin Luminescence, Sidereastrea siderea, , arbitrary relative units, , Corals and Sclerosponges, , ,N # #---------------- # Data: # Data lines follow (have no #) # Data line format - tab-delimited text, variable short name as header # Missing Values: NAN # age lumin 1987.000 104 1986.900 96 1986.800 94 1986.700 88 1986.600 98 1986.500 86 1986.400 90 1986.300 86 1986.200 84 1986.100 93 1986.000 84 1985.923 89 1985.846 97 1985.769 89 1985.692 85 1985.615 99 1985.538 102 1985.462 92 1985.385 113 1985.308 91 1985.231 108 1985.154 105 1985.077 98 1985.000 101 1984.933 103 1984.867 102 1984.800 94 1984.733 115 1984.667 107 1984.600 91 1984.533 107 1984.467 99 1984.400 90 1984.333 106 1984.267 95 1984.200 115 1984.133 107 1984.067 94 1984.000 119 1983.900 99 1983.800 112 1983.700 113 1983.600 108 1983.500 113 1983.400 113 1983.300 103 1983.200 104 1983.100 110 1983.000 88 1982.923 110 1982.846 105 1982.769 100 1982.692 100 1982.615 113 1982.538 114 1982.462 109 1982.385 116 1982.308 129 1982.231 118 1982.154 114 1982.077 120 1982.000 121 1981.944 140 1981.889 111 1981.833 118 1981.778 120 1981.722 123 1981.667 111 1981.611 117 1981.556 112 1981.500 110 1981.444 119 1981.389 103 1981.333 123 1981.278 106 1981.222 125 1981.167 115 1981.111 107 1981.056 137 1981.000 112 1980.917 127 1980.833 133 1980.750 123 1980.667 117 1980.583 118 1980.500 118 1980.417 119 1980.333 106 1980.250 110 1980.167 125 1980.083 107 1980.000 120 1979.941 101 1979.882 108 1979.824 115 1979.765 96 1979.706 118 1979.647 119 1979.588 120 1979.529 117 1979.471 122 1979.412 111 1979.353 128 1979.294 111 1979.235 114 1979.176 121 1979.118 112 1979.059 117 1979.000 110
