In this study, we present new records of annual skeletal density, linear extension and calcification rates for 16 Porites spp. coral cores from northeastern Hainan Island, northern South China Sea. Based on average growth characteristics from 1948 to 2001, P.lobata had significantly higher linear extension and calcification rates and lower density than P.lutea. We also found evidence of an age-related effect on growth, whereby skeletal density decreased and linear extension rate increased through time. This did not affect calcification rates. The average calcification rate for northeastern Hainan Island Porites matches that expected for Indo-Pacific Porites based on average sea surface temperatures (SST) from 1961 to 1990. After removal of the ontogenetic trends, average 16-core calcification rates from 1923 to 2002 showed an initial increase, matching observed SST warming. After 1982, however, calcification significantly decreased, although SST did not continue to warm. We suggest that the lower calcification rates from 1983 to 2002 may be a response to eutrophication of coastal waters as a result of extensive coastal aquaculture development. In summary, our new growth records from Hainan Island show that, despite species differences, calcification rates were typical of Indo-Pacific Porites but that in the latter half of the 20th Century, calcification rates have likely responded to both globally and locally induced changes in the marine climate experienced by the corals. #--------------------------------------- # Funding_Agency # Funding_Agency_Name: # Grant: #--------------------------------------- # Site Information # Site_Name: Hainan Island # Location: South China Sea # Country: China # Northernmost_Latitude: 19.33 # Southernmost_Latitude: 19.3 # Easternmost_Longitude: 110.68 # Westernmost_Longitude: 110.67 # Elevation: #--------------------------------------- # Data_Collection # Collection_Name: 0C031 Su2016 # First_Year: 1887 # Last_Year: 2002 # Time_Unit: AD # Core_Length: # Notes: #--------------------------------------- # Chronology_Information # Chronology: #--------------------------------------- # Variables # Data variables follow that are preceded by "##" in columns one and two. # Variables list, one per line, shortname-tab-longname components (9 components: what, material, error, units, seasonality, archive, detail, method, C or N for Character or Numeric data) ## age_AD age,,,years AD,,,,,N ## ext-p.lut extension rate,Porites lutea,,cm/yr,annual,corals and sclerosponges,,,N ## dens-p.lut skeletal density,Porites lutea,,g cm-3,annual,corals and sclerosponges,,,N ## calcif-p.lut calcifiction,Porites lutea,,g cm-2 yr-1,annual,corals and sclerosponges,,,N #------------------------ # Data # Data lines follow (have no #) # Data line format - tab-delimited text, variable short name as header # Missing Value: NA age_AD ext-p.lut skelden-p.lut calcif-p.lut 1887 1.632 1.023 1.669 1888 1.617 1.100 1.778 1889 1.466 1.056 1.547 1890 1.236 1.143 1.413 1891 1.245 1.164 1.449 1892 1.201 1.222 1.468 1893 1.345 1.211 1.629 1894 1.359 1.195 1.624 1895 1.562 1.177 1.839 1896 1.578 1.083 1.709 1897 1.736 1.051 1.826 1898 1.549 1.034 1.602 1899 1.716 1.012 1.736 1900 1.603 0.998 1.599 1901 1.583 1.045 1.654 1902 1.609 1.098 1.766 1903 1.331 1.158 1.541 1904 1.233 1.271 1.566 1905 1.351 1.396 1.886 1906 1.319 1.363 1.797 1907 1.309 1.467 1.920 1908 1.352 1.388 1.877 1909 1.282 1.465 1.879 1910 1.358 1.411 1.915 1911 1.256 1.436 1.803 1912 1.191 1.424 1.696 1913 1.320 1.426 1.883 1914 1.256 1.408 1.768 1915 1.232 1.411 1.737 1916 1.302 1.327 1.727 1917 1.275 1.305 1.664 1918 1.213 1.306 1.584 1919 1.125 1.245 1.400 1920 1.380 1.221 1.685 1921 1.183 1.279 1.512 1922 1.124 1.251 1.407 1923 1.187 1.290 1.530 1924 1.211 1.302 1.577 1925 1.209 1.289 1.558 1926 1.264 1.330 1.681 1927 1.298 1.279 1.659 1928 1.288 1.351 1.740 1929 1.272 1.332 1.694 1930 1.289 1.325 1.708 1931 1.339 1.277 1.709 1932 1.255 1.247 1.565 1933 1.417 1.245 1.763 1934 1.442 1.233 1.778 1935 1.357 1.253 1.700 1936 1.416 1.221 1.730 1937 1.519 1.239 1.881 1938 1.630 1.247 2.033 1939 1.561 1.229 1.919 1940 1.511 1.255 1.897 1941 1.380 1.235 1.704 1942 1.334 1.221 1.628 1943 1.312 1.257 1.649 1944 1.389 1.257 1.745 1945 1.437 1.267 1.822 1946 1.416 1.291 1.828 1947 1.370 1.296 1.776 1948 1.355 1.317 1.786 1949 1.366 1.366 1.866 1950 1.482 1.379 2.044 1951 1.450 1.418 2.057 1952 1.282 1.394 1.787 1953 1.498 1.323 1.982 1954 1.364 1.288 1.757 1955 1.494 1.249 1.866 1956 1.369 1.237 1.693 1957 1.598 1.224 1.956 1958 1.433 1.226 1.758 1959 1.442 1.196 1.725 1960 1.535 1.209 1.856 1961 1.651 1.224 2.020 1962 1.380 1.230 1.698 1963 1.481 1.237 1.832 1964 1.461 1.193 1.743 1965 1.624 1.187 1.928 1966 1.412 1.254 1.770 1967 1.603 1.246 1.998 1968 1.634 1.313 2.146 1969 1.561 1.313 2.050 1970 1.466 1.299 1.904 1971 1.417 1.269 1.799 1972 1.346 1.203 1.619 1973 1.252 1.133 1.418 1974 1.281 1.116 1.431 1975 1.443 1.137 1.640 1976 1.466 1.163 1.705 1977 1.602 1.163 1.864 1978 1.428 1.191 1.701 1979 1.349 1.196 1.614 1980 1.337 1.250 1.671 1981 1.455 1.325 1.929 1982 1.374 1.339 1.840 1983 1.231 1.285 1.582 1984 1.348 1.170 1.577 1985 1.361 1.075 1.463 1986 1.586 0.906 1.436 1987 1.897 0.917 1.739 1988 1.610 0.905 1.457 1989 1.659 0.858 1.423 1990 1.807 0.803 1.451 1991 1.868 0.756 1.412 1992 1.676 0.805 1.348 1993 1.889 0.787 1.487 1994 2.000 0.803 1.606 1995 2.036 0.779 1.586 1996 1.831 0.764 1.399 1997 2.001 0.834 1.668 1998 1.443 0.878 1.266 1999 1.999 0.802 1.603 2000 1.849 0.873 1.614 2001 1.827 0.821 1.499 2002 1.730 0.782 1.353
