In this study, we present new records of annual skeletal density, linear extension and calcification rates for 16 Porites spp. coral cores from northeastern Hainan Island, northern South China Sea. Based on average growth characteristics from 1948 to 2001, P.lobata had significantly higher linear extension and calcification rates and lower density than P.lutea. We also found evidence of an age-related effect on growth, whereby skeletal density decreased and linear extension rate increased through time. This did not affect calcification rates. The average calcification rate for northeastern Hainan Island Porites matches that expected for Indo-Pacific Porites based on average sea surface temperatures (SST) from 1961 to 1990. After removal of the ontogenetic trends, average 16-core calcification rates from 1923 to 2002 showed an initial increase, matching observed SST warming. After 1982, however, calcification significantly decreased, although SST did not continue to warm. We suggest that the lower calcification rates from 1983 to 2002 may be a response to eutrophication of coastal waters as a result of extensive coastal aquaculture development. In summary, our new growth records from Hainan Island show that, despite species differences, calcification rates were typical of Indo-Pacific Porites but that in the latter half of the 20th Century, calcification rates have likely responded to both globally and locally induced changes in the marine climate experienced by the corals. #--------------------------------------- # Funding_Agency # Funding_Agency_Name: # Grant: #--------------------------------------- # Site Information # Site_Name: Hainan Island # Location: South China Sea # Country: China # Northernmost_Latitude: 19.33 # Southernmost_Latitude: 19.3 # Easternmost_Longitude: 110.68 # Westernmost_Longitude: 110.67 # Elevation: #--------------------------------------- # Data_Collection # Collection_Name: 0C032 Su2016 # First_Year: 1922 # Last_Year: 2002 # Time_Unit: AD # Core_Length: # Notes: #--------------------------------------- # Species # Species_Name: Any additional species should be entered in Columns C,D, etc. # Common_Name: # Tree_Species_Code: #--------------------------------------- # Chronology_Information # Chronology: #--------------------------------------- # Variables # Data variables follow that are preceded by "##" in columns one and two. # Variables list, one per line, shortname-tab-longname components (9 components: what, material, error, units, seasonality, archive, detail, method, C or N for Character or Numeric data) ## age_AD age,,,years AD,,,,,N ## ext-p.lob extension rate,Porites lobata,,cm/yr,annual,corals and sclerosponges,,,N ## dens-p.lob skeletal density,Porites lobata,,g cm-3,annual,corals and sclerosponges,,,N ## calcif-p.lob calcifiction,Porites lobata,,g cm-2 yr-1,annual,corals and sclerosponges,,,N #------------------------ # Data # Data lines follow (have no #) # Data line format - tab-delimited text, variable short name as header # Missing Value: NA age_AD ext-p.lob skelden-p.lob calcif-p.lob 1922 1.207 1.645 1.363 1923 0.950 1.482 1.560 1924 1.106 1.618 1.463 1925 1.044 1.598 1.530 1926 1.001 1.496 1.494 1927 1.231 1.782 1.448 1928 1.193 1.669 1.398 1929 1.148 1.751 1.525 1930 1.141 1.725 1.511 1931 1.176 1.702 1.447 1932 1.275 1.855 1.455 1933 1.323 1.903 1.439 1934 1.408 2.051 1.456 1935 1.294 1.869 1.444 1936 1.224 1.750 1.430 1937 1.197 1.673 1.397 1938 1.233 1.742 1.413 1939 1.250 1.751 1.401 1940 1.253 1.768 1.411 1941 1.337 1.848 1.381 1942 1.348 1.880 1.394 1943 1.282 1.810 1.412 1944 1.450 2.003 1.382 1945 1.479 1.980 1.339 1946 1.636 2.070 1.265 1947 1.556 1.952 1.254 1948 1.487 1.879 1.264 1949 1.568 1.941 1.237 1950 1.997 2.222 1.113 1951 1.862 2.011 1.080 1952 1.666 1.701 1.021 1953 1.933 1.973 1.021 1954 1.857 1.880 1.012 1955 2.056 2.110 1.027 1956 2.019 2.010 0.995 1957 1.953 1.993 1.020 1958 2.076 2.261 1.089 1959 2.031 2.250 1.108 1960 1.923 2.216 1.152 1961 1.628 1.882 1.156 1962 2.047 2.304 1.125 1963 2.233 2.535 1.135 1964 1.987 2.222 1.118 1965 1.747 1.959 1.122 1966 1.725 1.935 1.122 1967 1.719 1.903 1.107 1968 1.629 1.825 1.121 1969 1.574 1.774 1.127 1970 1.503 1.687 1.123 1971 1.546 1.720 1.112 1972 1.466 1.689 1.152 1973 1.559 1.765 1.132 1974 1.860 2.166 1.165 1975 1.913 2.157 1.128 1976 1.890 2.083 1.102 1977 2.017 2.158 1.070 1978 2.150 2.170 1.010 1979 2.289 2.304 1.006 1980 2.415 2.461 1.019 1981 2.092 2.092 1.000 1982 2.333 2.288 0.981 1983 1.876 1.779 0.948 1984 1.993 1.835 0.921 1985 2.092 1.797 0.859 1986 2.197 1.902 0.866 1987 2.353 2.143 0.911 1988 2.177 2.037 0.936 1989 2.113 1.950 0.923 1990 2.243 2.120 0.945 1991 2.104 1.979 0.941 1992 2.196 1.939 0.883 1993 2.231 1.945 0.872 1994 2.188 1.900 0.868 1995 2.188 1.856 0.848 1996 2.034 1.741 0.856 1997 2.510 2.127 0.847 1998 2.358 1.973 0.837 1999 2.269 1.980 0.873 2000 2.345 2.021 0.862 2001 2.482 2.072 0.835 2002 2.322 2.117 0.912
