In this study, we present new records of annual skeletal density, linear extension and calcification rates for 16 Porites spp. coral cores from northeastern Hainan Island, northern South China Sea. Based on average growth characteristics from 1948 to 2001, P.lobata had significantly higher linear extension and calcification rates and lower density than P.lutea. We also found evidence of an age-related effect on growth, whereby skeletal density decreased and linear extension rate increased through time. This did not affect calcification rates. The average calcification rate for northeastern Hainan Island Porites matches that expected for Indo-Pacific Porites based on average sea surface temperatures (SST) from 1961 to 1990. After removal of the ontogenetic trends, average 16-core calcification rates from 1923 to 2002 showed an initial increase, matching observed SST warming. After 1982, however, calcification significantly decreased, although SST did not continue to warm. We suggest that the lower calcification rates from 1983 to 2002 may be a response to eutrophication of coastal waters as a result of extensive coastal aquaculture development. In summary, our new growth records from Hainan Island show that, despite species differences, calcification rates were typical of Indo-Pacific Porites but that in the latter half of the 20th Century, calcification rates have likely responded to both globally and locally induced changes in the marine climate experienced by the corals. #--------------------------------------- # Funding_Agency # Funding_Agency_Name: # Grant: #--------------------------------------- # Site Information # Site_Name: Hainan Island # Location: South China Sea # Country: China # Northernmost_Latitude: 19.33 # Southernmost_Latitude: 19.3 # Easternmost_Longitude: 110.68 # Westernmost_Longitude: 110.67 # Elevation: #--------------------------------------- # Data_Collection # Collection_Name: 0C04A Su2016 # First_Year: 1901 # Last_Year: 2003 # Time_Unit: AD # Core_Length: # Notes: #--------------------------------------- # Chronology_Information # Chronology: #--------------------------------------- # Variables # Data variables follow that are preceded by "##" in columns one and two. # Variables list, one per line, shortname-tab-longname components (9 components: what, material, error, units, seasonality, archive, detail, method, C or N for Character or Numeric data) ## age_AD age,,,years AD,,,,,N ## ext-p.lob extension rate,Porites lobata,,cm/yr,annual,corals and sclerosponges,,,N ## dens-p.lob skeletal density,Porites lobata,,g cm-3,annual,corals and sclerosponges,,,N ## calcif-p.lob calcifiction,Porites lobata,,g cm-2 yr-1,annual,corals and sclerosponges,,,N #------------------------ # Data # Data lines follow (have no #) # Data line format - tab-delimited text, variable short name as header # Missing Value: NA age_AD ext-p.lob skelden-p.lob calcif-p.lob 1901 1.391 1.407 1.012 1902 1.780 1.889 1.061 1903 1.744 1.877 1.076 1904 1.495 1.523 1.019 1905 1.422 1.411 0.992 1906 1.617 1.509 0.933 1907 1.834 1.669 0.910 1908 1.581 1.482 0.937 1909 1.769 1.651 0.933 1910 1.736 1.700 0.979 1911 1.657 1.606 0.969 1912 1.607 1.550 0.964 1913 1.938 1.836 0.947 1914 2.046 1.926 0.941 1915 1.682 1.594 0.948 1916 1.583 1.593 1.006 1917 1.735 1.713 0.987 1918 2.082 2.111 1.014 1919 1.889 1.840 0.974 1920 1.940 1.986 1.024 1921 1.754 1.779 1.014 1922 2.064 2.018 0.978 1923 1.995 1.954 0.980 1924 1.886 1.874 0.994 1925 1.814 1.863 1.027 1926 1.806 1.997 1.106 1927 2.070 2.226 1.076 1928 1.834 2.012 1.097 1929 1.844 2.045 1.109 1930 1.982 2.206 1.113 1931 1.629 1.781 1.094 1932 1.670 1.839 1.101 1933 1.790 2.044 1.142 1934 1.784 1.918 1.075 1935 1.790 1.820 1.017 1936 1.964 2.011 1.024 1937 1.979 2.047 1.035 1938 1.708 1.700 0.995 1939 1.724 1.756 1.019 1940 1.773 1.803 1.017 1941 1.834 1.830 0.998 1942 1.978 2.031 1.027 1943 1.968 2.025 1.029 1944 1.723 1.781 1.034 1945 1.722 1.786 1.037 1946 1.868 1.957 1.048 1947 1.871 2.015 1.077 1948 1.828 1.956 1.070 1949 2.031 2.146 1.057 1950 1.865 1.981 1.062 1951 2.119 2.222 1.048 1952 2.021 2.076 1.027 1953 1.912 1.910 0.999 1954 1.681 1.688 1.004 1955 1.745 1.768 1.014 1956 1.733 1.802 1.040 1957 1.750 1.797 1.027 1958 1.880 1.969 1.048 1959 1.951 2.030 1.041 1960 1.802 1.836 1.019 1961 1.705 1.662 0.974 1962 1.572 1.524 0.970 1963 1.626 1.630 1.003 1964 1.846 1.799 0.975 1965 2.008 1.965 0.979 1966 1.848 1.815 0.982 1967 1.714 1.709 0.997 1968 1.866 1.799 0.964 1969 1.765 1.720 0.975 1970 1.681 1.627 0.968 1971 1.693 1.634 0.965 1972 1.543 1.489 0.965 1973 1.710 1.676 0.981 1974 1.768 1.735 0.981 1975 1.809 1.756 0.971 1976 1.916 1.854 0.968 1977 1.866 1.789 0.959 1978 1.886 1.825 0.968 1979 1.808 1.734 0.959 1980 1.794 1.724 0.961 1981 1.966 1.865 0.949 1982 1.807 1.671 0.924 1983 1.778 1.579 0.888 1984 1.601 1.352 0.844 1985 1.787 1.483 0.830 1986 1.917 1.576 0.822 1987 1.864 1.530 0.820 1988 1.669 1.359 0.814 1989 1.883 1.574 0.836 1990 1.867 1.601 0.857 1991 1.828 1.573 0.860 1992 1.869 1.575 0.842 1993 1.826 1.527 0.836 1994 1.900 1.562 0.822 1995 1.637 1.332 0.813 1996 1.644 1.329 0.808 1997 1.830 1.520 0.831 1998 1.770 1.530 0.865 1999 1.710 1.500 0.877 2000 1.753 1.553 0.886 2001 2.023 1.768 0.874 2002 1.766 1.475 0.835 2003 1.715 1.393 0.812
