In this study, we present new records of annual skeletal density, linear extension and calcification rates for 16 Porites spp. coral cores from northeastern Hainan Island, northern South China Sea. Based on average growth characteristics from 1948 to 2001, P.lobata had significantly higher linear extension and calcification rates and lower density than P.lutea. We also found evidence of an age-related effect on growth, whereby skeletal density decreased and linear extension rate increased through time. This did not affect calcification rates. The average calcification rate for northeastern Hainan Island Porites matches that expected for Indo-Pacific Porites based on average sea surface temperatures (SST) from 1961 to 1990. After removal of the ontogenetic trends, average 16-core calcification rates from 1923 to 2002 showed an initial increase, matching observed SST warming. After 1982, however, calcification significantly decreased, although SST did not continue to warm. We suggest that the lower calcification rates from 1983 to 2002 may be a response to eutrophication of coastal waters as a result of extensive coastal aquaculture development. In summary, our new growth records from Hainan Island show that, despite species differences, calcification rates were typical of Indo-Pacific Porites but that in the latter half of the 20th Century, calcification rates have likely responded to both globally and locally induced changes in the marine climate experienced by the corals. #--------------------------------------- # Funding_Agency # Funding_Agency_Name: # Grant: #--------------------------------------- # Site Information # Site_Name: Hainan Island # Location: South China Sea # Country: China # Northernmost_Latitude: 19.33 # Southernmost_Latitude: 19.3 # Easternmost_Longitude: 110.68 # Westernmost_Longitude: 110.67 # Elevation: #--------------------------------------- # Data_Collection # Collection_Name: QG042 Su2016 # First_Year: 1887 # Last_Year: 1991 # Time_Unit: AD # Core_Length: # Notes: #--------------------------------------- # Chronology_Information # Chronology: #--------------------------------------- # Variables # Data variables follow that are preceded by "##" in columns one and two. # Variables list, one per line, shortname-tab-longname components (9 components: what, material, error, units, seasonality, archive, detail, method, C or N for Character or Numeric data) ## age_AD age,,,years AD,,,,,N ## ext-p.lut extension rate,Porites lutea,,cm/yr,annual,corals and sclerosponges,,,N ## dens-p.lut skeletal density,Porites lutea,,g cm-3,annual,corals and sclerosponges,,,N ## calcif-p.lut calcifiction,Porites lutea,,g cm-2 yr-1,annual,corals and sclerosponges,,,N #------------------------ # Data # Data lines follow (have no #) # Data line format - tab-delimited text, variable short name as header # Missing Value: NA age_AD ext-p.lut skelden-p.lut calcif-p.lut 1887 1.148 1.390 1.596 1888 1.033 1.357 1.402 1889 0.896 1.352 1.212 1890 0.993 1.344 1.334 1891 1.083 1.309 1.417 1892 0.926 1.339 1.240 1893 0.890 1.358 1.209 1894 0.817 1.341 1.096 1895 0.859 1.354 1.163 1896 0.868 1.384 1.202 1897 0.733 1.360 0.996 1898 0.858 1.310 1.123 1899 0.790 1.312 1.036 1900 0.792 1.296 1.026 1901 0.918 1.308 1.202 1902 0.858 1.317 1.130 1903 1.096 1.342 1.470 1904 0.967 1.400 1.353 1905 0.848 1.453 1.232 1906 0.911 1.482 1.350 1907 0.858 1.455 1.248 1908 0.754 1.449 1.093 1909 0.889 1.425 1.268 1910 0.892 1.467 1.309 1911 0.977 1.391 1.359 1912 0.877 1.482 1.301 1913 1.045 1.446 1.511 1914 1.078 1.465 1.580 1915 1.210 1.560 1.888 1916 1.099 1.524 1.674 1917 1.166 1.543 1.799 1918 1.156 1.557 1.799 1919 1.238 1.530 1.894 1920 1.169 1.476 1.726 1921 1.052 1.388 1.460 1922 1.180 1.390 1.640 1923 1.244 1.336 1.662 1924 1.095 1.245 1.363 1925 1.165 1.171 1.365 1926 1.163 1.219 1.418 1927 1.204 1.194 1.437 1928 1.134 1.158 1.313 1929 1.429 1.087 1.554 1930 1.072 1.035 1.109 1931 1.182 1.117 1.320 1932 1.188 1.084 1.288 1933 1.205 1.088 1.311 1934 1.174 1.071 1.257 1935 1.104 1.118 1.234 1936 1.266 1.200 1.519 1937 1.303 1.197 1.559 1938 1.334 1.215 1.621 1939 1.317 1.274 1.678 1940 1.458 1.336 1.947 1941 1.265 1.351 1.708 1942 1.321 1.326 1.750 1943 1.231 1.320 1.625 1944 1.144 1.303 1.490 1945 1.098 1.287 1.414 1946 1.283 1.285 1.649 1947 1.271 1.291 1.640 1948 1.261 1.303 1.643 1949 1.154 1.283 1.481 1950 1.216 1.261 1.533 1951 1.257 1.170 1.471 1952 1.214 1.170 1.419 1953 1.346 1.181 1.590 1954 1.452 1.187 1.723 1955 1.319 1.229 1.621 1956 1.406 1.223 1.719 1957 1.658 1.238 2.053 1958 1.521 1.230 1.871 1959 1.495 1.236 1.847 1960 1.508 1.221 1.841 1961 1.402 1.212 1.699 1962 1.364 1.228 1.675 1963 1.495 1.274 1.905 1964 1.323 1.242 1.642 1965 1.377 1.195 1.645 1966 1.500 1.211 1.816 1967 1.392 1.225 1.705 1968 1.487 1.265 1.882 1969 1.522 1.307 1.988 1970 1.160 1.304 1.512 1971 1.450 1.246 1.806 1972 1.555 1.123 1.746 1973 1.504 1.128 1.697 1974 1.613 1.121 1.809 1975 1.344 1.119 1.503 1976 1.307 1.105 1.444 1977 1.741 1.082 1.884 1978 1.710 1.115 1.907 1979 1.449 1.090 1.580 1980 1.481 1.069 1.583 1981 1.521 1.030 1.567 1982 1.507 1.004 1.513 1983 1.477 0.900 1.329 1984 1.425 0.863 1.231 1985 1.612 0.926 1.493 1986 1.435 0.932 1.337 1987 1.548 0.968 1.498 1988 1.401 1.020 1.429 1989 1.649 1.014 1.672 1990 1.648 0.970 1.599 1991 1.129 1.050 1.186
