STUDY NOTES: DESCRIPTION: Stalagmite D4 was collected 500 m from the entrance and ~100 m below the surface in Dongge Cave, southern China (25°17N, 108°5E, elevation=680 m). Its total length is 304 cm and its diameter ranges between 12 and 20 cm. Most (~80%) of the rainfall in the region surrounding Dongge Cave occurs during the summer monsoon months (May–Oct). Rainwater collected at Guiyang, ~160 km northwest of Dongge Cave, has oxygen isotope ratios (VSMOW) which range between -3.4 per mil in the winter and -12.4 per mil in the summer. The Dongge Cave isotope record is therefore a proxy for Asian Monsoon intensity.
