<dc:description xmlns:dc="http://purl.org/dc/elements/1.1/" xmlns:ows="http://www.opengis.net/ows">Core C2-05 proxy data and varve thickness from Lake Linne', west coast of Spitsbergen, Svalbard, Norway. Lake Linneŋ, located on the west coast of Spitsbergen Svalbard, was cored in 2005 to evaluate the varve record of the proximal sub-basin located at the south end of the lake. This core site was thought to be the most sensitive to changes in sediment flux of the main inflow meltwater stream and would thereby yield a sensitive record of up-valley glacier activity. The recovered core was measure for magnetic susceptibility (ms), organic matter content (LOI), carbonate content, and sampled for Cs-137 activity. Varve thickness measurements were made between 1963 and 2004 and compared with climate data from the Longyearbyen airport for the same interval. Lamination thickness varied from 2.0 to 12.6mm in the 60 cm long core and annual sedimentation since the '63/'64 Cs spike averaged 4.5 mm per year. Bulk density varied from 1.1 g/cc to 1.6 g/cc, LOI varied from 5 to 9% and carbonate content ranges from 2.5 to 8.5%. The Cesium activity profile shows a peak ('63/'64) at 18.5 cm core depth. Annual lamination thickness was related to summer average temperature, annual precipitation and glacier mass balance (Midre Lovenbreen - NyAlesund) for the interval 1963 to 2005. Lamination thickness showed a poor relationship with each of the climate parameters, suggesting that other factors are complicating the relationships between climate and lamination thickness. More recent work based on annual (and spring) sediment trap records suggests that annual laminations can often be complex due to sediment transport during the spring-nival melt event. In particular, the ""intensity"" of the spring melt event which directly influences stream discharge (and thereby stream capacity and competence) appears to be the main factor influencing deposition of the annual coarse grained material. This research suggest that there may not be a direct link between glacier mass balance and varve thickness in high Arctic lakes and that glacier-fed lakes having long intervening fluvial systems should be avoided when using lamination thickness to reconstruct past climates. Further, core locations too close to the inflow stream may contain complex lamination stratigraphies due to ""with-in lake"" sedimentation distribution processes.
