  <dc:description xmlns:dc="http://purl.org/dc/elements/1.1/" xmlns:ows="http://www.opengis.net/ows">The initial rise in atmospheric CO2 during the last deglaciation was likely driven by input of carbon from a 13C-depleted reservoir [Schmitt et al., 2012]. Here we show that high resolution benthic foraminiferal records from the mid-depth Brazil Margin display an abrupt drop in d13C during Heinrich Stadial 1 (HS1) that is similar to but larger than in the atmosphere. Comparing the Brazil Margin results to published records from the North Atlantic, we are unable to account for the South Atlantic d13C data with conservative mixing between northern and southern component water masses. Rapid input of abyssal water from the Southeast Atlantic could account for deglacial d13C anomalies at the Brazil Margin but it would require a reversal in deep water flow direction compared to today. A new mid-depth water mass may explain similar HS1 d13C values in both the North and South Atlantic, but contrasting oxygen isotopic values between the two basins do not support the presence of a single dominant water mass at mid-depths. Instead, it appears that d13C behaved non-conservatively during the deglaciation, possibly reflecting the input of carbon from an isotopically depleted source. 
          STUDY NOTES: Data include age model and stable isotopic data for Brazil Margin cores KNR159-5-17JPC, 78GGC, 33GGC, and 30GGC.  
Stable isotopic data for 36GGC and 42JPC are given in Curry and Oppo (2005).  The age model for 36GGC is provided in 
Sortor and Lund (2011) while that for 42JPC is given in Hoffman and Lund (2012). Noted age reversals were not used 
in the age models.  All calendar ages are based on the MARINE09 calibration curve assuming a Delta R of 0±200 years 
 (1 sigma)  For details see Tessin and Lund (2013).  Isotopic measurements were based on individual tests of 
Cibicidoides spp.  Bioturbated samples are noted where appropriate.  These values were not included in the 
running mean averages or the time slice averages presented in the paper.  Individual d13C values in 17JPC 
 that were &gt;0.3 per mil offset from the running mean value are also excluded.</dc:description>
