<dc:description xmlns:dc="http://purl.org/dc/elements/1.1/" xmlns:ows="http://www.opengis.net/ows">Progress in paleoclimatology increasingly occurs via data syntheses. We describe proxy records included in a collection of paleoclimate data prepared for use in the context of a paleoclimate state estimation, specifically the Last Millennium Reanalysis (LMR). The 2290 series include 2152 chronologies and 138 other series supplement the 571 PAGES2k Consortium series used in the LMR. The additional data draws from lake core, ice core, coral, speleothem, and tree ring archives, using published data primarily from the NOAA paleoclimatology archive and a set of tree ring width chronologies standardized from raw International Tree Ring Data Bank (ITRDB) ring width series. The data were structured as individual NOAA Paleoclimatology format files, and redundant series and series containing errors were eliminated. A processing step can be used to average the series to annual resolution and standardize variable names. In contrast to many previous paleo compilations, the data were not selected (screened) on the basis of their environmental correlation, multi-century length, or other attributes. The inclusion of proxies sensitive to moisture and other environmental variables expands their use in data assimilation. A preliminary calibration using linear regression with mean annual temperature reveals characteristics of the proxy series and their relationship to temperature, as well as the noise and error characteristics of the records. The collection will continue to be improved and expanded as part of the Last Millennium Reanalysis project.
STUDY NOTES: A collection of paleoclimate data prepared for a paleoclimate state estimation, specifically the Last Millennium Reanalysis (LMR). There are 2322 data sets. They include 2152 chronologies and 138 other series and supplement the 571 PAGES2k Consortium series used in the LMR. There are an additional 32 files that contain reconstructions. They are provided to enable comparisons but are not used by the LMR because generally the LMR uses raw data and not reconstructions. The additional data draws from lake core, ice core, coral, speleothem, and tree ring archives, using published data primarily from the NOAA paleoclimatology archive and a set of tree ring width chronologies standardized from raw International Tree Ring Data Bank (ITRDB) ring width series. The data were structured as individual NOAA Paleoclimatology format files, and redundant series and series containing errors were eliminated.</dc:description>
