          STUDY NOTES: Repository of paleontological fossils. Repository comprises Botany (including plants, fungi, lichens, etc.), Conchology (shells), Entomology (including insects and other terrestrial arthropods), Lithology (rocks), Mineralogy (minerals), Osteology (bones), Palaeontology (fossils), Study skins, Taxidermy (&apos;stuffed&apos; specimens). The collections focus on material from N. Herts but include specimens from elsewhere in the UK. Notable are: Local chalk fossils Jurassic fossil material Birds include collections of William Twine, Dr A.H. Foster, J. Beddal-Smith, R. Marlborough-Pryor, Lord Rothschild, H.A. Course and others. Many are cited in works such as A History of British Birds (1843-1885) by W. Yarrell. The collection contains a single specimen of the Rufous-tailed Rock Thrush from N. Herts and representing the first record of this species for the British Isles. There is also a N. Herts specimen of a Least Bittern, a N. American species otherwise recorded only once in the UK, but this record is contentious and is currently under review.
