  <Summary>
A depth-age scale and an accumulation history for the Holocene have been established on the Greenland Ice Sheet Project 2 (GISP2) deep core, providing the most continuously dated record of annual layer accumulation currently available. The depth-age scale was obtained with the use of various independent techniques to count annual layers in the core. An annual record of surface accumulation during the Holocene was obtained by correcting the observed layer thicknesses for flow-thinning. Fluctuations in accumulation provide a continuous and detailed record of climate variability over central Greenland during the Holocene. Climate events, including &quot;Little Ice Age&quot; type events, are examined.
          STUDY NOTES: The Meese/Sowers timescale is the official timescale for the GISP2 ice
core, up to and including many of the publications in the 1997 GRIP/GISP2
compendium volume of the Journal of Geophysical Research. This timescale
was created by combining the original layer-counted timescale of Meese and
others (1994), to about 50,000 years, with a timescale constructed using
trace gas measurements from the Vostok and GISP2 cores, placed on the
SPECMAP marine timescale.
