    <Title>Late-Quaternary vegetation, climate, and fire history of the Southeast Atlantic Coastal Plain based on a 30,000-yr multiple-proxy record from White Pond, South Carolina (USA)</Title>
    <Series>Quaternary Research</Series>
  </Reference>
  <Summary>
Late-Quaternary environmental dynamics in the southeastern US are poorly understood due to low site density and problematic chronologies. We present a 30,000-yr record of temeprature and ecosystem dynamics from White Pond, SC that consists of high-resolution well-dated (15 AMS 14C dates) analyses of branched glycerol dialkyl tetraethers (brGDGTs). Between 30-20 ka, open pine-spruce forest grew under cold dry conditions, with little evidence for rapid millennial-scale climate variations associated with Dansgaard-Oeschger cycles and Heinrich events recorded in the North Atlantic. However, elevated oak and surface fires before 26 ka suggest warmer conditions in the Southeast before the last glacial maximum, possibly corresponding to an interstadial in the Great Lakes region. Warming between 19.7-10.4 ka was accompanied by a transition to mesic hardwood forest. We observe warming during the Younger Dryas chronozone, in keeping with other records of temperature and climate from this region.
