DATA DESCRIPTION: Vertical thin sections from the GISP2 core were examined on the Rigsby stage for c-axis orientation. Data are given by depth, and then the theta, phi and grain number. Grain number is an identification. Theta and phi are the orientation of the c-axis of the grain relative to the symmetry axis of the core (i.e. vertical); note that this means that the c-axes have been rotated so that phi=0 is vertical, with phi the inclination of the c-axis from vertical. Theta is the azimuth, and the zero is arbitrary (the core was not oriented when collected) although all grains in a single thin section have the same zero azimuth. Following the entire file for a thin section is a group of files. These are given as the coordinates at which a c-axis plots on an equal area net, followed by the grain number. They are grouped in stripes, horizontals, and normal grains. As described in the manuscript, the thin sections contained dark-looking regions because the grains have near-vertical c-axes, inclined stripes of grains with inclined c-axes, and horizontal layers with some grains having inclined c-axes. A thin section may have one or more stripes, etc. Not all grains were classified in all cases, and in some cases a grain may have been counted more than once (say, if it fell at the intersection of two stripes).
