This El Nino episode was associated \r\nwith elevated sea-surface temperatures and caused mass mortality \r\nthroughout many of the world's coral reefs. We analyzed the \r\nisotopic manifestation of this event in six Porites sp. coral \r\nskeletons from different localities in a small atoll (Alphonse) \r\nat the Seychelles Island. The aim was to validate the use of coral \r\nstable isotope compositions as recorders of such events in the past. \r\nThe coupling between local-scale environment and global warming \r\nwas weaker then expected, with regional warming being evident \r\nonly when data from five colonies were averaged. Local conditions \r\nhad a large effect on the isotopic compositions of coral skeletons. \r\nWe conclude that future paleoclimate reconstructions, especially \r\nthose attempts to identify past El Nino events, must be based on \r\nmore than a single coral record. Moreover, the strong effect \r\nof local habitat on the isotopic composition of Porites sp. \r\nhas to be considered when interpreting d13C and d18O records. \r\n","author":null,"citation":"Levy, O., M.
