We found that the precipitation-evaporation balance\r\nvaries naturally on time scales of 5-6 years and 18-25 years.\r\nHigh (low) SSTs are associated with positive (negative)\r\nd18Oseawater implying that atmospheric variability is linked\r\nwith remote climate modes in the Indian Ocean and the\r\ntropical/extratropical Pacific Ocean. Warm El Nino-Southern\r\nOscillation events are associated with a negative freshwater\r\nbalance at Mayotte. This case study demonstrates that a\r\nmuch denser network of d18Oseawater reconstructions is\r\ncrucial for understanding the spatial patterns of hydrological\r\nconditions.","author":{"name":"Zinke, J., M.
