The well-defined \r\nseasonal layering appearing in stable-isotope and trace element \r\ndistribution identified the physical links controlling the climate \r\nand aerosol concentration signals. Air temperature and humidity/\r\nprecipitation were the primary determinants of stable-isotope ratios. \r\nMost precipitation over the Pamirs originated in the Atlantic. \r\nIn summer, water vapor was re-evaporated from semi-arid regions \r\nin central Eurasia. The semi-arid regions contribute to non-soluble \r\naerosol loading in snow accumulated on Fedchenko glacier. In the \r\nPamir core, concentrations of rare earth elements, major and other \r\nelements were less than those in the Tien Shan but greater than \r\nthose in Antarctica, Greenland, the Alps and the Altai. \r\nThe content of heavy metals in the Fedchenko cores is 2-14 times \r\nlower than in the Altai glaciers. Loess from Afghan-Tajik deposits \r\nis the predominant lithogenic material transported to the Pamirs. \r\nTrace elements generally showed that aerosol concentration tended \r\nto increase on the windward slopes during dust storms but tended \r\nto decrease with altitude under clear conditions.
