Here we show that north-south ITCZ migration \r\nwas not the only mechanism of tropical Pacific hydrologic \r\nvariability during the last millennium, and that PWC variability \r\nprofoundly influenced tropical Pacific hydrology.  We present \r\nhydrological reconstructions from Cattle Pond, Dongdao Island \r\nof the South China Sea, where multi-decadal rainfall and downcore \r\ngrain size variations are correlated to the Southern Oscillation \r\nIndex during the instrumental era. Our downcore grain size \r\nreconstructions indicate that this site received less precipitation \r\nduring relatively warm periods, AD 1000-1400 and AD 1850-2000, \r\ncompared with the cool period (AD 1400-1850). Including our new \r\nreconstructions in a synthesis of tropical Pacific records results \r\nin a spatial pattern of hydrologic variability that implicates \r\nthe PWC.
