Based on \r\nthese relationships we use down-core d18Ocal measurements as \r\na proxy for d18Oprecip that varies with the intensity of SASM \r\nprecipitation. Pumacocha d18Ocal increased rapidly between 11,200 \r\nand 10,300 yr B.P. from -14.5‰ to -10.5‰, reaching a maximum of \r\n-10.3‰ by 9800 yr B.P. After 9800 yr B.P., d18Ocal underwent a \r\nlong-term decrease that tracked increasing Southern Hemisphere \r\nsummer insolation, suggesting that enhanced SASM precipitation \r\nwas linked to precessional forcing. Higher-frequency trends did \r\nnot follow insolation and therefore represent other variability \r\nin the climate system. Millennial-scale trends from Pumacocha \r\nstrongly resemble those from lower-resolution tropical Andean \r\nice and lake core isotopic records, particularly the Huascaran \r\nice core, and low elevation speleothems. These relationships \r\nsuggest that tropical Andean isotopic records reflect variations \r\nin precipitation intensity related to precessional forcing rather \r\nthan tropical temperatures. They also demonstrate a coherent \r\npattern of SASM variability, although with differences between \r\nlow elevation and Andean records during the late Glacial to Holocene \r\ntransition and the late Holocene. Centennial and decadal SASM \r\nprecipitation variability is also apparent. Reduced SASM rainfall \r\noccurred from 10,000-9200, 7000-5000, 1500-900 yr B.P. and during \r\nthe last 100 years. Intensifications of the SASM occurred at 5000, \r\n2200-1500, and 550-130 yr B.P. with the amplitude of variability \r\nincreasing after 2200 yr B.P. These periods may represent SASM \r\nresponses to ocean-atmosphere variability related to orbital \r\nand radiative forcing (e.g., El Niño-Southern Oscillation \r\nand the Intertropical Convergence Zone). \r\n\r\n","author":null,"citation":"Bird, B.W., M.A. Abbott, D.T.
