We also provide one of the first evaluations of the \r\nutility of d2Hwax as a paleoclimate proxy in Arctic proglacial lakes. \r\nWe compare varve thickness and d2Hwax at sub-decadal resolution from \r\n1948 to 2004 AD, and at sub-centennial resolution from 1450 to 2004 AD. \r\nVarve thickness and d2Hwax both contain large interannual variability \r\nand are anti-correlated during the late twentieth century, suggesting \r\nthat both proxies respond rapidly, but by different mechanisms, \r\nto catchment-scale forcings. At longer time scales, varve thickness \r\nexhibits a strong response to Little Ice Age cooling (1661-1827 AD \r\nin this record) but does not show evidence for twentieth century \r\nwarming recorded throughout the Arctic. d2Hwax does record regional-\r\nscale temperature changes, with more 2H-depleted values during the \r\nLittle Ice Age and an abrupt change to more 2H-enriched values \r\nin the twentieth century. This corresponds well with a recent \r\nArctic-wide temperature reconstruction in which the seventeenth \r\ncentury is the coldest interval, and the twentieth century is the \r\nwarmest interval. Our results suggest that d2Hwax is a promising proxy \r\nthat can be applied at high resolution in proglacial Arctic lakes. ","author":null,"citation":"Thomas, E.K., S. McGrane, J.P. Briner, and Y.
