Moreover, good correlation between \nthe lake record and a previously published d18O time series from \nan Irish speleothem indicates that the changes in oxygen isotopes \nare best explained by variations in the isotopic composition of \nprecipitation. The amplitude of change during this period is \ntoo large to be explained by shifts in condensation temperature. \nInstead we suggest that there have been changes in vapour source \nand transport paths connected with shifts in atmospheric circulation. \nChanges from a source area from further south within the North Atlantic \nto one further to the north could explain the prominent positive shift \nin oxygen-isotope values between the early eighteenth and early \nnineteenth centuries, for example.
