Clay mineralogy (smectite/\nillite+chlorite) and geochemical signatures (K and Ti intensities) \nindicate fluctuations in the detrital sedimentation during the Holocene \nin the Pigmy Basin. They likely reflect alternations between at least \ntwo dominant terrigenous sources: the smectite-rich NW Mississippi \nwatershed, and the illite- and chlorite-rich Great Lakes province \nand NE Mississippi watershed. These recurring and rapid modifications \nof erosional processes over this period suggest changes in the \nhydrological regime via rainfall patterns. Such a modification during \nthe Holocene is likely linked with the rapid atmospheric reorganization\nfollowing the final collapse of the Laurentide Ice Sheet. Indeed, \nmineralogical and geochemical proxies indicate east-to-west migrations \nof the main detrital source (from the Great Lakes and north-eastern \nprovince toward the north-western province) associated with Mississippi \nRiver megaflood episodes. These modifications of the main detrital \nsources likely record migrations of the precipitation belt, which are \nconstrained by atmospheric configuration (Jet Stream, Bermuda High \nand Intertropical Convergence Zone position) and subtropical oceanic \nhydrological properties (meridional extension of the Atlantic Warm \nPool).In the frame of previously published rainfall patterns over \nthe Caribbean and North America, our results highlight some marked \nmodifications of moisture transfer throughout the Holocene. \nThese changes are interpreted as resulting from two atmospheric \nconfigurations that have driven alternately the precipitation \ndistribution over North America for the last 10 ka with an apparent \ncyclicity of ~2.5 ka. upper 359 cm) \nwas studied at high resolution (average sample resolution of ~47 yr) \nfor clay mineralogy and grain size.
