During this long-term \r\ncooling trend, however, recent studies have documented several \r\nshort-lived warming and cooling phases. In order to further \r\ninvestigate high-latitude climate during these events, we developed \r\na high-resolution calcareous nannofossil record from ODP Site 748 \r\nHole B for the interval spanning the late middle Eocene to the late \r\nOligocene (~42 to 26 Ma). The primary goals of this study were to \r\nconstruct a detailed biostratigraphic record and to use nannofossil \r\nassemblage variations to interpret short-term changes in surface-water \r\ntemperature and nutrient conditions. The principal nannofossil \r\nassemblage variations are identified using a temperate-warm-water \r\ntaxa index (Twwt), from which three warming and five cooling events \r\nare identified within the middle Eocene to the earliest Oligocene \r\ninterval. Among these climatic trends, the cooling event at ~39 Ma \r\n(Cooling Event B) is recorded here for the first time. Variations \r\nin fine-fraction d18O values at Site 748 are associated with changes \r\nin the Twwt index, supporting the idea that significant short-term \r\nvariability in surface-water conditions occurred in the Kerguelen \r\nPlateau area during the middle and late Eocene. Furthermore, \r\nODP Site 748 calcareous nannofossil paleoecology confirms the \r\nutility of these microfossils for biostratigraphic, paleoclimatic, \r\nand paleoceanographic reconstructions at Southern Ocean sites \r\nduring the Paleogene. \r\n","author":null,"citation":"Villa, G., C.
