This enhanced freshwater inflow must have \r\ninfluenced the sea ice regime and likely is responsible for \r\npoor calcium carbonate preservation that characterizes the \r\nBaffin Island margin today. Sedimentologic and paleoceanographic \r\ndata from radiocarbon-dated core HLY03-05GC, Hall Basin, \r\nnorthern Nares Strait, document the timing and paleoenvironments \r\nsurrounding the retreat of waning ice sheets from Nares Strait \r\nand opening of this connection between the Arctic Ocean \r\nand Baffin Bay. Hall Basin was deglaciated soon before 10,300 \r\ncal BP (calibrated years before present) and records ice-distal \r\nsedimentation in a glacial bay facing the Arctic Ocean until \r\nabout 9,000 cal BP. Atlantic Water was present in Hall Basin \r\nduring deglaciation, suggesting that it may have promoted \r\nice retreat. A transitional unit with high ice-rafted debris \r\ncontent records the opening of Nares Strait at approximately \r\n9,000 cal BP. High productivity in Hall Basin between 9,000 \r\nand 6,000 cal BP reflects reduced sea ice cover and duration\r\nas well as throughflow of nutrient-rich Pacific Water. \r\nThe later Holocene is poorly resolved in the core, but slow \r\nsedimentation rates and heavier carbon isotope values support \r\nan interpretation of increased sea ice cover and decreased \r\nproductivity during the Neoglacial period.\r\n\r\n\r\n","author":null,"citation":"Jennings, A.E., C.
