Several studies have discussed \r\na potential linkage between North Pacific and Atlantic climate \r\non various time scales. On decadal time scales no relationship \r\ncould be confirmed, potentially due to sparse instrumental \r\nobservations before 1950. Proxy data are limited and no multi- \r\ncentennial high-resolution marine geochemical proxy records \r\nare available from the subarctic North Pacific. Here we present \r\nan annually-resolved record (1818-1967) of Mg/Ca variations \r\nfrom a North Pacific/Bering Sea coralline alga that extends \r\nour knowledge in this region beyond available data. It shows \r\nfor the first time a statistically significant link between \r\ndecadal fluctuations in sea-level pressure in the North Pacific \r\nand North Atlantic. The record is a lagged proxy for decadal- \r\nscale variations of the Aleutian Low. It is significantly \r\nrelated to regional sea surface temperature and the North \r\nAtlantic Oscillation (NAO) index in late boreal winter \r\non these time scales. Our data show that on decadal time scales \r\na weaker Aleutian Low precedes a negative NAO by several years. \r\nThis atmospheric link can explain the coherence of decadal \r\nNorth Pacific and Atlantic Multidecadal Variability, \r\nas suggested by earlier studies using climate models \r\nand limited instrumental data.
