The Quaternary section is up to ~90 m thick, \r\nconsists of a variety of estuarine, shelf, back-barrier, \r\nand lagoonal deposits, and has been influenced by multiple \r\nsea-level cycles. The temporal resolution of the amino acid \r\nracemization method is tested statistically and with the \r\nstratigraphic control provided by this geologic framework, \r\nand it is then applied to the correlation and age estimation \r\nof subsurface units throughout the region. Over 500 specimens \r\n(primarily Mercenaria and Mulinia) from the subsurface section \r\nhave been analyzed using either gas chromatographic (GC) \r\nor reverse-phase liquid chromatographic (RPLC) techniques. \r\nThe subsurface stratigraphic data are compared with AAR results \r\nfrom numerous natural or excavated exposures from the surrounding \r\nregion, as well as results from NC beach collections, to develop \r\na comprehensive aminostratigraphic database for the entire \r\nQuaternary record within the NC coastal system. Age mixing, \r\nrecognized in the beach collections, is also seen in subsurface \r\nsections, usually where major seismic reflections or core lithology \r\nindicate the presence of stratigraphic discontinuities. \r\nKinetic models for racemization are tested within the regional \r\nstratigraphic framework, using either radiocarbon or U-series \r\ncalibrations or comparison with regional biostratigraphy. \r\nThree major Pleistocene aminozones [AZ2, AZ3, and AZ4] are found \r\nthroughout the region, all being found in superposition in several \r\ncores. Each can be subdivided, yielding a total of at least eight \r\nstratigraphically and statistically distinct aminozones. \r\nKinetic modeling, supplemented with local calibration, indicates \r\nthat these aminozones represent depositional events ranging from \r\n~80 ka to nearly 2 Ma. Three prominent seismic reflections are \r\ninterpreted to represent the base of the early, middle, and late \r\nPleistocene, respectively, roughly 2 Ma, 800 ka, and 130 ka. \r\nThe large number of samples and the available stratigraphic control \r\nprovide new insights into the capabilities and limitations of \r\naminostratigraphic methods in assessing relative and numerical ages \r\nof Atlantic Coastal Plain Quaternary deposits. \r\n\r\n","author":null,"citation":"Wehmiller, J.F., E.R.
