Alloisoleucine/\r\nisoleucine ratios of two species of the same age can vary \r\nby more than a factor of 2. This finding, in combination \r\nwith the known temporal and spatial variability of \r\nforaminiferal assemblages, demonstrates the critical \r\nimportance of basing geochronological studies of marine \r\nsediments on monospecific samples. One rapidly epimerizing \r\nspecies generates a calibration curve of potentially high \r\nprecision for dating sediments between the ages of about \r\n50,000 to 400,000 years.
