Simulations of six bristlecone pine ring-width \nchronologies demonstrate the interpretability of model output \nas an accurate representation of the climatic controls on growth. \nEnsemble simulations by VS-Lite of two networks of North American \nring-width chronologies correlate with observations at higher \nsignificance levels on average than simulations formed by \nregression of ring width on the principal components of the \nsame monthly climate data. VS-Lite retains more skill outside \nof calibration intervals than does the principal components \nregression approach. It captures the dominant low- and high \nfrequency spatiotemporal ring-width signals in the network \nwith an inhomogeneous, multivariate relationship to climate.  \nBecause continuous meteorological data are most widely available \nat monthly temporal resolution, our model extends the set \nof sites at which forward-modeling studies are possible. \n","author":null,"citation":"Tolwinski-Ward, S.E., M.N.
