Nine radiocarbon dated hyrax (Procavia capensis) \r\ndung middens from the Kuiseb River Basin of the Namib Desert \r\nwere sub-sampled and analysed for fossil pollen. Some contain \r\nsmall proportions of rat droppings, but not many macro-fossils. \r\nComparative modern pollen in faecal samples were also studied. \r\nMost plant macro-fossils are severely digested, but seeds \r\nare well-preserved. Some insect inclusions were identified. \r\nSmall scale changes in vegetation over the last two millennia \r\nwere observed, representing environmental fluctuations in cycles \r\nof ca. 100-200 years.
