Recent evidence for the development of the modern \ncold tongue during the Pliocene-Pleistocene transition has been \nexplained as the result of extratropical cooling that drove \na shoaling of the thermocline. We have found that the sub-Antarctic \nand sub-Arctic regions underwent substantial cooling nearly \nsynchronous to the cold tongue development, thereby providing \nsupport for this hypothesis. In addition, we show that sub-Antarctic \nclimate changed in its response to Earth's orbital variations, \nfrom a subtropical to a subpolar pattern, as expected if cooling \nshrank the warm-water sphere of the ocean and thus contracted\nthe subtropical gyres. \n","author":null,"citation":"Martínez-Garcia, A., A.
