This chronology has been used to \nreconstruct the spring-early summer soil moisture balance \nover the heartland of the Mesoamerican cultural province, \nand is the first exactly dated, annually resolved paleoclimatic \nrecord for Mesoamerica spanning the Late Classic, Post Classic, \nColonial, and modern eras. The reconstruction indicates that \nthe Terminal Classic drought extended into central Mexico, \nsupporting other sedimentary and speleothem evidence for this \nearly 10th century drought in Mesoamerica. The reconstruction \nalso documents severe and sustained drought during the decline \nof the Toltec state (1149-1167) and during the Spanish conquest \nof the Aztec state (1514-1539), providing a new precisely dated \nclimate framework for Mesoamerican cultural change.
