We assess the interannual and decadal \r\nsensitivity of each proxy record to large-scale circulation indices \r\nfrom the Pacific, Indian and Southern Ocean regions over the twentieth \r\ncentury. We then analyse the potential of this newly expanded \r\npalaeoclimate network to collectively represent predictands \r\n(sea surface temperature, sea level pressure, surface air temperature \r\nand precipitation) commonly used in climate reconstructions. \r\nThe key dynamical centres-of-action of the equatorial Indo-Pacific \r\nare well captured by the palaeoclimate network, indicating that there \r\nis considerable reconstruction potential in this region, particularly \r\nin the post AD 1600 period when a number of long coral records are \r\navailable. Current spatiotemporal gaps in data coverage and regions \r\nwhere significant potential for future proxy collection exists \r\nare discussed. We then highlight the need for new and extended records \r\nfrom key dynamical regions of the Southern Hemisphere. Although \r\nlarge-scale climate field reconstructions for the SH are in their \r\ninfancy, we report that excellent progress in the development of \r\nregional proxies now makes plausible estimates of continental- \r\nto hemispheric-scale climate variations possible.\r\n","author":null,"citation":"Neukom, R. and J.
