The data allow climate variables \r\nrelated to growing season warmth, winter cold, and plant-available \r\nmoisture to be reconstructed. Continental-scale reconstructions \r\nhave been made for the mid-Holocene (MH, around 6 ka) and Last \r\nGlacial Maximum (LGM, around 21 ka), allowing comparison with \r\npalaeoclimate simulations currently being carried out as part of \r\nthe fifth Assessment Report (AR5) of the Intergovernmental Panel \r\non Climate Change. The synthesis of the available MH and LGM \r\nclimate reconstructions and their uncertainties, obtained using \r\nmodern analogue, regression and model-inversion techniques, \r\nis presented for four temperature variables and two moisture \r\nvariables. Reconstructions of the same variables based on \r\nsurface-pollen assemblages are shown to be accurate and unbiased. \r\nReconstructed LGM and MH climate anomaly patterns are coherent, \r\nconsistent between variables, and robust with respect to the \r\nchoice of technique. They support a conceptual model of the \r\ncontrols of Late Quaternary climate change whereby the first-order \r\neffects of orbital variations and greenhouse forcing on the \r\nseasonal cycle of temperature are predictably modified by \r\nresponses of the atmospheric circulation and surface energy balance. \r\n\r\n\r\n","author":{"name":"Bartlein, P.J.,  S.P.
