We \r\nrefer to this equation as the Physical Chemistry Fire \r\nFrequency Model (PC2FM). The equation was calibrated \r\nand validated with North American fire data \r\n(170 sites) prior to widespread industrial influences \r\n(before \u00021850 CE) related to land use, fire suppression, \r\nand recent climate change to minimize \r\nnon-climatic effects. We derived and validated the \r\nempirically based PC2FM for the purpose of estimating \r\nmean fire intervals (MFIs) from proxies of \r\nmean maximum temperature, precipitation, their \r\ninteraction, and estimated reactant concentrations. \r\nParameterization of the model uses reaction rate \r\nequations based on the concentration and physical \r\nchemistry of fuels and climate. The model was then \r\ncalibrated and validated using centuries of empirical \r\nfire history data. An application of the PC2FM \r\nregression equation is presented and used to estimate \r\nhistoric MFI as controlled by climate. We \r\ndiscuss the effects of temperature, precipitation, and \r\ntheir interactions on fire frequency using the \r\nPC2FM concept and results. The exclusion of \r\ntopographic, vegetation, and ignition variables from \r\nthe PC2FM increased error at fine spatial scales, but \r\nallowed for the prediction of complex climate effects \r\nat broader temporal and spatial scales.
