Hydroclimatic variations of the Medieval Climate Anomaly (MCA) provide a setting for studying ecological responses to recent climate variability at magnitudes and timescales comparable to expectations of coming centuries. We examined forest response to the MCA in the humid western Great Lakes region of North America, using proxy records of vegetation, fire, and hydroclimate. Multi-decadal moisture variability during the MCA was associated with a widespread, episodic decline in Fagus grandifolia (beech) populations. Spatial patterns of drought and forest changes were coherent, with beech declining only in areas where proxy-climate records indicate that severe MCA droughts occurred. The occurrence of widespread, drought-induced ecological changes in the Great Lakes region indicates that ecosystems in humid regions are vulnerable to rapid changes in drought magnitude and frequency. #------------------ # Funding_Agency # Funding_Agency_Name: # Grant: #------------------ # Site_Information # Site_Name: Pinhook Bog # Location: Indiana # Country: United States of America # Northernmost_Latitude: 41.6141 # Southernmost_Latitude: 41.6141 # Easternmost_Longitude: -86.8459 # Westernmost_Longitude: -86.8459 # Elevation: 259 #------------------ # Data_Collection # Collection_Name: Pinhook.Booth.2012 # Earliest_Year: 1877.0 # Most_Recent_Year: -19.4 # Time_Unit: BP # Core_Length: # Notes: #------------------ # Species # Species_Name: # Species_Code: # Common_Name: #------------------ # Chronology: core drive driveDepth depth labNumber age error nan nan nan 0.0 nan -55.0 1.0 1.0 1.0 69.0 69.5 GX-32857-AMS 500.0 40.0 1.0 1.0 81.0 81.5 GX-32855-AMS 640.0 40.0 1.0 1.0 95.0 95.5 GX#32098 570.0 35.0 1.0 2.0 9.0 104.5 GX-32854-AMS 720.0 40.0 1.0 2.0 39.0 134.5 GX-32853-AMS 1030.0 40.0 1.0 2.0 81.0 176.5 GX-32858-AMS 1170.0 50.0 1.0 2.0 95.0 187.5 GX#32099 1100.0 35.0 1.0 3.0 8.0 196.5 GX-32856-AMS 1170.0 40.0 1.0 3.0 24.0 212.5 GX-32859-AMS 1270.0 60.0 1.0 3.0 57.0 245.5 GX-32852-AMS 1460.0 40.0 1.0 3.0 91.0 279.5 GX#32100 1640.0 80.0 1.0 4.0 33.0 315.5 GX#32101 1820.0 35.0 1.0 5.0 7.0 322.5 GX#32102 2140.0 70.0 #------------------ # Variables # # Data variables follow that are preceded by "##" in columns one and two. # Data line variables format: Variables list, one per line, shortname-tab-longname-tab-longname components ( 10 components: what, material, error, units, seasonality, archive, detail, method, C or N for Character or Numeric data, additional_information) # ##year age,,,year CE,,,,,N ##Water_tableDepth water table depth,,,cm, ,climate reconstruction;paleolimnology,,,N, ##age age, , , calendar years before present, , , , ,N ##depth depth,,,cm,,,,,N, ##err water table depth,,unspecified error,cm, ,climate reconstruction;paleolimnology,,,N ##detrendedWtd water table depth,,,cm, ,climate reconstruction;paleolimnology,detrended , ,N, # #------------------ # Data: # Data lines follow (have no #) # Data line format -
