We present spatial comparisons of a diverse network of moisture-sensitive proxies with 12 global circulation model simulations from the Paleoclimate Model Intercomparison Project to determine the most important atmospheric drivers behind observed mid-Holocene aridity in this region. Although model-proxy agreement is low for most models, in part reflecting small mid-Holocene precipitation anomalies, three show relatively strong agreement by successfully simulating arid conditions across the Pacific Northwest. The model that shows the strongest spatial agreement with the proxy network reveals an anticyclonic wind anomaly that is similar to but weaker than anomalies noted during westwide drought episodes of the past 500 years. This model suggests increased transient upper level ridging that reduced winter water vapor transport from the south-west during the mid-Holocene. These mechanisms are similar to those suggested to have supported megadrought conditions in western North America during the Medieval Climate Anomaly and which are also simulated in anthropogenic warming scenarios. Future work on quantitative proxy records to enhance temporal and spatial coverage, and explicitly address issues of seasonality, will improve the quality of future climate model–data comparison studies. #--------------------------------------- # Funding_Agency # Funding_Agency_Name: National Science Foundation # Grant: AGS-1203701, AGS-1554998 #--------------------------------------- # Site Information # Site_Name: Western North America # Location: North America # Country: United States of America # Northernmost_Latitude: 50 # Southernmost_Latitude: 28 # Easternmost_Longitude: -105 # Westernmost_Longitude: -125 # Elevation: #--------------------------------------- # Data_Collection # Collection_Name: WNAm Final Network Hermann2018 # First_Year: 6000 # Last_Year: 6000 # Time_Unit: cal yr BP # Core_Length: # Notes: #--------------------------------------- # Chronology_Information # Chronology: #--------------------------------------- # Variables # Data variables follow that are preceded by "##" in columns one and two. # Variables list, one per line, shortname-tab-longname components (9 components: what, material, error, units, seasonality, archive, detail, method, C or N for Character or Numeric data) ## Location sample identification,,,unitless,,climate reconstructions,,,C,Name of site or number for aggregated sites ## numsites number of samples,,,unitless,,climate reconstructions,,,N,number of sites for aggregated locations ## Latitude latitude,,,degree north,,climate reconstructions,,,N, ## Longitude longitude,,,degree east,,climate reconstructions,,,N, ## Category notes,,,unitless,,climate reconstructions,,,C,hydroclimatic designation at 6 ka (d=drier, w=wetter, n=no change) #------------------------ # Data # Data lines follow (have no #) # Data line format - tab-delimited text, variable short name as header # Missing Value: NA Location numsites Latitude Longitude Category 1 2 48.773 -125.08 n 2 2 47.942 -124.49 d 3 7 48.542 -123.73 n 4 2 49.191 -124.12 n 5 3 49.028 -122.27 d 6 2 48.255 -118.61 d 7 2 48.694 -119.34 d 8 5 46.761 -121.96 d 9 2 48.236 115.37 d 10 2 48.758 -117.19 d 11 2 44.93 -110.66 d 12 2 45.091 -108.45 d 13 2 42.066 -123.42 n 14 4 41.333 -122.54 d 15 2 42.189 -111.76 d 16 2 39.711 -107.34 d 17 2 38.813 -106.93 w 18 2 37.596 -109.61 w 19 2 39.326 -114.11 d 20 3 36.54 -115.15 w 21 5 38.074 -119.47 d 22 2 37.086 -119.29 d 23 2 35.473 -116.5 n 24 3 34.151 -116.85 d 25 2 31.151 -115.34 d 26 2 32.439 -114.08 n 27 3 31.98 -113.18 w 28 2 32.42 -111.47 w 29 3 36.282 -112.06 d 30 2 31.397 -108.88 n 31 2 31.467 -110.42 w 32 2 44.59 -122.88 d Pinecrest Lake 1 50.5 -121.5 d Kelowna Bog 1 49.933 -119.383 d Turtle Lake 1 49.327 -124.96 n Mahoney Lake 1 49.283 -119.58333 d Foy Lake 1 48.17 -114.35 d Lake Washington 1 47.667 -122.216667 d Carp Lake 1 45.917 -120.883333 d Battle Ground Lake 1 45.805 -122.494 d Lost Trail Pass Bog 1 45.75 -113.966667 n Cub Creek Pond 1 44.506 -110.246 d Little Lake 1 44.167 -123.58409 d Cub Lake 1 44.133 -111.183333 d Gold Lake Bog 1 43.65 -122.041667 d Lake of the Woods 1 43.48 -109.89 d Rattlesnake Cave 1 43.383 -112.633333 d Murphey's rock shelter 1 43.2 -116.1 d Grays Lake 1 43.063 -111.439 d Fish Lake 1 42.733 -118.633333 d Lake Cleveland 1 42.317 -113.65 d Mission Cross Bog 1 41.783 -115.483333 d Medicine Lake 1 41.583 -121.603092 d Little Windy Hill pond 1 41.43 -106.33 d Homestead Cave 1 41.16 -112.93 d Upper Big Creek 1 40.91 -106.62 d Snowbird Bog 1 40.583 -111.916667 w Blue Lake 1 40.5 -114.03 d Little Willow Lake 1 40.411 -121.389539 d Ruby Lake/Marsh 1 40.11 -115.51 d Red Rock Lake 1 40.082 -105.542 n Pyramid Lake 1 40.062 -119.562 d Valleyview 1 39.5 -114.716667 w Lake Tahoe 1 39.097 -120.024898 d Clear Lake 1 39.065 -122.84 d Gatecliff Shelter/June Canyon 1 39.017 -116.75 w Sevier Lake 1 39 -113.13 n Glenmire 1 37.99 -122.78 d Little Molas Lake 1 37.74 -107.71 d White Mountains 1 37.7 -118.33 n Eureka View 1 37.333 -117.783333 n Owens Lake 1 36.435 -117.96 d Las Vegas Valley 1 36.558 -115.513 d Atlatl Cave 1 36.033 -107.9 n Tulare Lake 1 36 -119.75 d McCullough Range 1 35.75 -115.166667 d Stewart Bog 1 35.667 -105.75 d Estancia Basin 1 35.067 -106.616667 d San Antonio Creek Section 1 34.776 -120.494 d Joshua Tree National Monument 1 34.033 -116.183333 w Montezuma Well 1 34 -112 d San Agustin Plain 1 33.967 -108.566667 w Lake Elsinore 1 33.659 -117.351392 d Lake Cahuilla (Salton Basin) 1 33.45 -116.05 w Sacramento Mountains 1 32.83 -105.92 w Lake Cochise 1 32.167 -109.867 d Pink Panther Cave 1 32.083 -105.166667 w Palomas Basin 1 31.167 -107.417 w Laguna Babicora 1 29.35 -107.819 d Sierra Madre Occidental 1 28.417 -108.566667 w Mojave Desert 1 35 -117 d Moose Lake 1 47.88 -123.35 d Humptulips Bog 1 47.28 -123.917 d Yahoo Lake 1 47.683 -124.017 d McCall Fen 1 44.937 -116.036 d Rapid Lake 1 42.729 -109.195 d Williams Fen 1 47.333 117.583 d
