Recent global warming is weakening the annual surface gradient in the Northern Hemisphere by preferentially warming the high latitudes; however, the implications of these changes for mid-latitude climate remain uncertain. Here we show that a weaker latitudinal temperature gradient - that is, warming of the Arctic with respect to the Equator - during the early to middle part of the Holocene coincided with substantial decreases in mid-latitude net precipitation (precipitation minus evapotranspiration, at 30 N to 50 N). We quantify the evolution of the gradient and of mid-latitude moisture both in a new compilation of Holocene palaeoclimate records spanning from 10 S to 90 N and in an ensemble of mid-Holocene climate model simulations. The observed pattern is consistent with the hypothesis that a weaker temperature gradient led to weaker mid-latitude westerly flow, weaker cyclones and decreased net terrestrial mid-latitude precipitation. Currently, the northern high latitudes are warming at rates nearly double the global average, decreasing the Equator-to-pole temperature gradient to values comparable with those in the early to middle Holocene. If the patterns observed during the Holocene hold for current anthropogenically forced warming, the weaker latitudinal temperature gradient will lead to considerable reductions in mid-latitude water resources. #------------------ # Funding_Agency # Funding_Agency_Name: Science Foundation Arizona Bisgrove Scholar # Grant: BP 0544-13 #------------------ # Funding_Agency # Funding_Agency_Name: US National Science Foundation # Grant: AGS-1602105, EAR-1347221 #------------------ # Funding_Agency # Funding_Agency_Name: State of Arizona Technology and Research Initiative Fund # Grant: #------------------ # Funding_Agency # Funding_Agency_Name: USGS Climate and Land Use Program # Grant: #------------------ # Site_Information # Site_Name: # Location: # Country: # Northernmost_Latitude: # Southernmost_Latitude: # Easternmost_Longitude: # Westernmost_Longitude: # Elevation: #------------------ # Data_Collection # Collection_Name: # Earliest_Year: # Most_Recent_Year: # Time_Unit: # Core_Length: # Notes: #------------------ # Chronology_Information # Chronology: # #---------------- # Variables # # Data variables follow are preceded by "##" in columns one and two. # Data line variables format: one per line, shortname-tab-variable components (what, material, error, units, seasonality, data type,detail, method, C or N for Character or Numeric data, free text) # # #---------------- # Data: # Data lines follow (have no #) # Data line format - tab-delimited text, variable short name as header # Missing Values: # age (BP) Mg/Ca (°C) 2434.545455 24.76282597 3209.090909 24.74452519 3673.818182 24.86366793 3983.636364 24.54552026 4370.909091 24.5470036 4758.181818 24.60714767 5222.909091 24.42481009 5610.181818 24.49272729 5992.307692 24.90120835 6353.846154 24.72033231 6679.230769 24.61871737 7076.923077 24.5398553 7510.769231 24.67148413 7800 24.52734569 8197.692308 24.51501979 8523.076923 24.77410856 8812.307692 24.377597 9101.538462 24.83637524 9607.692308 24.28215048 9969.230769 24.24879476 10258.46154 24.16984019 10693.22581 24.29208517 10876.29032 24.2501006 11279.03226 24.25722817 11645.16129 24.0175916 12157.74194 23.68807525 12560.48387 23.9228505 12890 23.78304594 12996.84211 23.79632734 13027.36842 24.50533512 13073.15789 23.93658406 13164.73684 23.79020536 13225.71429 23.73832011 13454.28571 23.81014904 13637.14286 23.7553908 13876.77419 23.67739554 14018.70968 23.49145795 14217.41935 23.78107567 14501.29032 23.77055931 14671.6129 24.23907446 14955.48387 23.81411024 15352.90323 23.70712527 15691.71429 23.58866673 15915.14286 23.79554113 16138.57143 23.7051429 16697.14286 23.62539236 17144 23.60259722 17926 23.53509327 18596.28571 23.64054309 19602.42857 23.8284869 19995.92857 23.51021738 20614.28571 23.79347797 21738.57143 23.34078464 22188.28571 23.47142399 22638 23.43568316 22975.28571 23.40082296 23425 23.60061117 24099.57143 23.65126385 24774.14286 23.62939305 25448.71429 23.43158212 26010.85714 23.7043764 27472.42857 23.5329626
