Barnabetti French Violin - fran040 Additional Information Peter Ratcliff Purpose of Collection: Archaeology, dating of musical instruments Notes: French violin by Jerome Thibouville Lamy workshops in Mirecourt, France, made around 1925, and labelled Barnabetti. Two piece Norway spruce front, book matched from a single wedge. Statistically significant matches of t>6 (t-value according to Baillie & Pilcher) with ITRDB FRAN039, from McCormick, Topham & Michaud, suggesting the switch of "tonewood" source from the Alps to the more local Jura. Very few instruments made prior to 1900 cross-match with Jura Chronologies. The spruce on this violin, as well as most used in the workshops of Mirecourt after the first world war appear to come from the nearby Jura Mountains. Instrument owned by Amanda Finnamore, UK.
