Acta Oecologica 14, 2, 229-246. Silver fir (Abies alba Mill.) decline in the Jura mountains (French/Swiss border) was examined by a dendroecological approach. The Jura mountains lie in eastern France, on the border with Switzerland. The sample comprised 208 sites selected within the natural species range (230Êkm long and 50Êkm wide). It covered the ecological variation and stand age of silver fir in this calcareous massif: 144 plots are in France and 64 in the Swiss Jura. On average, the sample density was one sample plot per 800Êha of silver fir forests. The altitudes ranged between 550 and 1350Êm and the precipitation between 1200 to 2500Êmm/year. The surface of the sample plots was about 400Êm2, and their vegetation and ecological characteristics were homogeneous. On each site, altitude, aspect, slope and topographic position were recorded. A comprehensive floristic survey ("relevŽ") was also carried out using abundance-dominance coefficients. The soil was described by the depth, the decarbonation and the particle size analysis, and linked to one of ten main soil types previously described. The calcareous soils are dominant in this region. Six canopy dominant silver firs were chosen at each site regardless of canopy health. On each tree, needle loss was assessed (at 5% intervals), as well as degree of foliage yellowing, height, crown height, circumference and degree of competition (relative crown length, percentage of contact between the crown and the next trees). Different stand densities and silvicultural managements are practised among the study area: 74.5% sample stands are even-aged forests, and 25.5% are selection forests. In 1989, each silver fir was bored to the pith at breast height and the 1248 corresponding cores were planed with a sharp blade. In total, 115Ê170 ring widths were measured with a binocular microscope fitted with a "drawing tube" and a digitizing tablet coupled to a computer. After crossdating, using pointer years, each ring corresponded exactly to the date it was formed. The raw tree-ring widths are given in 1/100mm in the file..
