The influence of winter temperatures on the annual radial growth of six northern-range-margin tree species. Dendrochronologia 22: 7-29. Notes: This collection of QUMO (Quercus montana – formerly known as Q. prinus) raw ring widths was made by N. Pederson on rolling sandstone, near West Milford, NJ. These data were collected for a dendroecological study of southern temperate trees growing at or near a northern range margin. While the oldest trees in the stand were targeted, the goal of field sampling was to collect a range of existing tree ages within the stand. The stand in which these trees are sampled generally has shallow soil depth, although there are areas with pockets of deep soil. This collection contains one of the highest densities of 400+ yr old chestnut oak. The forest was dense at the time of sampling and is mostly old-growth forest; some portions of this forest has evidence of logging, though it is not at all obvious the oldest chestnut oak trees. However, it seems likely that hemlock-woolly adelgid started killing the co-occurring eastern hemlock in roughly the mid-1990s. Several trees show an abrupt increase in ring width around that time. Also, the oldest tree grew about 2.5 cm in radius over 100-150 yrs; the suppression in this tree, and others, is great and similar to what an eastern hemlock might do. Because of this and despite chestnut oak’s relative intolerance to shade, detrending of these raw data should be conducted with closed-canopy or forest interior conditions and forest disturbance in mind.
