DESCRIPTION: Tree-ring records from Morocco and Finland are combined with GISP2 d18O and accumulation records to develop a lengthy multi-proxy reconstruction of the winter season (December, January, February) North Atlantic Oscillation (NAO). The reconstruction extends from AD 1429-1983, (December date) accounting for 31% of the variance in the instrumental NAO over the calibration period of AD 1863-1983 (December date). The instrumental NAO index used for calibration purposes was calculated based on sea level pressure data from Iceland and from Lisbon, Portugal (J. Hurrell, personal communication). The reconstruction does capture the low frequency variability and spectral characteristics of the instrumental NAO. While the reconstruction does not quite capture the wide range of magnitudes evident in the instrumental record, it does capture the timing of persistent patterns in the instrumental record. This reconstruction suggests that the seemingly anomalous high period evident in the instrumental NAO over the past few decades is not unique when considered in the multi-century context of this NAO reconstruction. Data provided here include the NAO reconstruction and the Moroccan tree-ring chronologies used in creating the reconstruction. The Karhunpe, Finland chronology is available through the ITRDB. The GISP2 data is available on CD-ROM and online through WDC-A Paleoclimatology. See the Original Reference for complete details of data, reconstruction methodology, and results. DATA: Chronology data vales used in the reconstruction can be found at: ftp://ftp.ncdc.noaa.gov/pub/data/paleo/treering/reconstructions/glueck2001_nao_tree.txt The Glueck and Stockton (2001) NAO reconstruction is a winter reconstruction based on Lisbon-Iceland (Jim Hurrell's Iceland data rather than Jones' data). Winter consists of Dec, Jan, Feb. The first column is date based on the December date so AD 1429 represents Dec 1429-Feb 1430 NAO and year AD 1430 tree data. The latest tree date was AD 1984 so the reconstruction ends with a 1983 NAO date. Second column is ARKOA, the published Glueck and Stockton (2001) reconstruction. ARKOA stands for Afraskou, Ich Ramouz, Karhunpe, GISP2 d180, and GISP2 accumulation. This is the final reconstruction to date.
